About
Where the Truth Lies

The phrase "where the truth lies" has always been one of my favorite oxymorons. So when I was recording the songs for my new CD, many of which deal with various perceptions of truth, I thought it only fitting to use the phrase as the title.

"Where the Truth Lies" represents something of a departure for me musically. It's my first solo project. It's the first recording I've made of my own material. And it's the first time I've sung lead vocals on a recording. I've sung a little before in live performances, but I've never really been out front before leading the band.

The Project

In the Spring of 2008, my great friend Doug Marsh called me and invited me to be the substitute lead guitar player in his band Catch a Dream, since the regular guitar player, Alan Stewart, occasionally had to miss some gigs due to other commitments. I ended up playing one gig with the band. Actually it was only half a gig, because Alan showed up in time for the second set. But it was that call from Doug that got me started playing again and what led to me writing the songs that ended up on "Where the Truth Lies."

The Songs

Picking the songs for the recording sessions was pretty easy. At that point, I'd only written a handful of songs. There wasn't real musical or conceptual criteria for choosing the songs. Really, it was just the ones that ended up being judged good enough to record. I picked Calypso Danced, You Take My Breath Away, Things'll Get Better, Ballad of a Dead Man, Don't Go to Jaco, and Hold On. Plus another song that didn't end up on the final recording, Gypsy King.

The Sessions

Once we'd decided what songs to record, the next logical step was to select a studio to record in. Parrot Tracks Studio in Austin was the obvious choice. I've known George Coyne, the owner, for twenty years and he's got an amazing ear and a great studio with a cool mix of vintage and digital equipment.

We had most of the instrumentation covered with Bob, Steve and me, but we needed a drummer. The first person that came to mind was Chris Sensat, drummer for The Alice Rose.
